Just another WordPress.com weblogWhy do the “in-betweeners” miss out on support? – 15 May 2009
The government are ploughing money into the resolution of NEET (or S (eeking) EET) young people. They are determined to decrease the numbers on the unemployed list and onto training or work (regardless of whether the chosen destination is what the young person wants to do) but this I feel is to the detriment of those young people “fly under the radar” those who are achieving acceptable grades and are not causing any trouble and therefore are only seen the term before they leave school!
The young people that are academic will already be “looked after” by their schools who like having their pupil destination statistics boosted by University places. While those who may leave with no qualifications are heavily supported by Connexions/Careers Scotland etc.
However, who is to say that the “in-betweeners” have a plan? They can often drift into traditionally or family chosen career paths that do not suit them. This can then lead to them feeling unfulfilled at work, training or university and could mean they drop out. If they drop out quickly after leaving school then they become an addition to the NEET statistics after all!!
More attention should be paid to all school pupils and more time should be given for advisers to work in the schools to achieve a more successful outcome all round and not a favoured “quick hits” scheme.
Idealist I know and I do also know that group work etc is for all pupils but I just think that there is something lacking in the type of support offered to these pupils. After all I should know – I was one of them!
