Active listening – 1st April 2009

After reading a couple of pages in today’s article the phrase “Active Listening” has played on my mind.  My thoughts are that can we be truly listening to someone all of the time?  Are we not always thinking about the next question we want to ask or being distracted by the random thoughts that come into your mind by word association?  I myself have a mind that doesn’t stop working – constantly I have thoughts in my head yet I have always thought of myself as a good listener.  The fact that we are a multi-tasking society lulls us in to the false sense of security that we can do everything at once but I don’t think this can include listening.  To truly listen for what has been said and more importantly what has not, means that we have to truly give ourselves over to it and slowly switch out all other distractions.  I will be more aware of this in future although if I am thinking to myself “listen to what the client is saying” I have already missed information they have said………
